Description: There is a tangible alchemy and performativity associated with metals going from solid to liquid state and back again. This transformation is all the more powerful if it is done in our everyday streets as was the case for the Can City project in São Paulo. Swine Studio gathered used aluminium cans, melted them in a portable furnace then cast them into new stools and other objects. The furnace was fired using waste vegetable oils collected from local restaurants. This is an exemplar of the cradle-to-cradle process first coined by William McDonough and Michael Braungart with their maxim, “waste=food”.
